Shorebird Followup

I went out this morning to see if any of the shorebirds that put down in the storms Thursday night continued today. As expected, most of the birds were gone. There were a few exceptions. At the Apollo, the breeding Spotted Sandpipers and Killdeer were still accompanied by three Least Sandpipers. At Morningside Park, I didn’t see any of the regular breeders, but one SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and one DUNLIN continue. I should have taken my kayak up because that Dunlin is really beautiful, I could have gotten some nice shots. I went through the Bashakill rather quickly, and all the usual suspects were seen or heard, nothing exceptional.

Summary of Shorebirds seen in Sullivan yesterday:

White-rumped Sandpiper – 1

Black-bellied Plover – 2

Short-billed Dowitcher – 13

Killdeer – 7

Least Sandpiper – 21

Semipalmated Sandpiper – 10

Semipalmated Plover – 3

Dunlin – 2

Spotted Sandpiper – 1

This was by far our best shorebird fallout in spring that we’ve ever experienced!
