Today, Arlene Borko and I took a tour of the county, hoping for winter finches. It was just a so-so day with a modest 35 species seen. The prominent birds of the day were Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Common Mergansers. Winter finches were not to be found, in fact only 3 American Gold-finches and one House Finch were seen in total and no other winter finches at all. That said, it was a nice day to be out and we enjoyed some good birds. Our bird of the day occurred on Muhlig Road when while I was driving along Arlene spotted a RUFFED GROUSE sitting high in a tree. We enjoyed the birds for several minutes before it suddenly took off and flew into the woods. A nice day.
