Bashakill – Fledglings Galore!

Juvenile Yellow-billed Cuckoo on the Birch Trail this morning.

Juvenile Yellow-billed Cuckoo on the Birch Trail this morning.

This morning I spent a couple of hours hiking the Stop Sign and Birch Trails at the Bashakill. It was immediately evident that their were recently fledged young of many species all around the trails. I was able to see chicks of the following species: Thrasher, Kingbird, Swamp Sparrow, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Orchard Oriole, Red-winged Blackbird, Grackle, Wood Duck, Catbird, Yellow Warbler and American Redstart! Not a bad bunch of juvies! The most interesting to me was the juvie Yellow-billed Cuckoo. I hadn’t seen a cuckoo of any kind in quite some time. I never saw any adults with this juvie. It was fully flighted, but behaved as any very immature bird would do. Taking short flights from spot to spot and checking all around it surroundings. It was quite interesting to watch this bird explore its environment. I don’t know if it has been left by its parents or if they were somewhere nearby watching it and me. I was able to get one decent shot of the bird. A great morning of beautiful weather and many neat new additions to our avifauna. By the way, Baltimore Orioles have vaporized!
