Lance Verderame and I traveled to Long Island this morning to try for some new year birds. We bird Jones Beach, Point Lookout, and Jamaica Bay. We had a great day! At Jones Beach we had our FOS Boat Tailed Grackles, American Oyster Catchers and more. We had a great showing of both male and female Harlequin Ducks. Long-tailed Duck, Black Scoter, Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebe and Red-breasted Merganser were all seen. A mega-flock of Dunlin were near the West End Jetty. From there we headed to Jamaica Bay, hoping for some target birds. We dipped on the Eurasian Wigeon (only two wigeon there) but had many good birds. At Big John’s Pond, we had a pair of BARN OWLS that we think may have been exhibiting courtship behavior. A great day overall! Here are some of the shots from out great day.
