Ulster County Barrow’s Goldeneye Continues!

As soon as I saw my daily needs alerts from ebird this morning I had my destination for the day. An adult drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYE had been found yesterday in the town park in Glasco, Ulster County. The park is right on the Hudson River. As Ed VanBuren and I headed over I had thoughts of the Eurasian Wigeon at Lighthouse Park in Esopus two weeks ago. I missed that one. We arrived at 9:30 am and quickly found the raft of Common Goldeneye. Scanning them with my bins, I couldn’t spot the Barrow’s. I quickly set up my scope and as soon as the raft crested a wave, the birds distinctly shaped head and white cheek crescent stood out in nice comparison with the Common Goldeneye drakes right next to him. Nice bird! The waves were high with a pretty stiff wind this morning so between that and their diving, photos were impossible. Still glad to get to see the bird.
