Montauk Long Island

This fabulous THICK-BILLED MURRE  was at Montauk Lake Intlet.

Karen Miller and I headed out to Montauk this morning to try for some of the good birds they have been having there. We had a great day! Our first stop was the Inlet to Montauk Lake on the West side on West Lake Drive. Upon our arrival, we saw two gentleman out on the jetty scoping. By the time we readied ourselves to head out, they had come in. They informed us that the THICK-BILLED MURRE was present out near the end of the jetty and showing well. We headed out the jetty, immediately spotting the bird. We had great scope views and then moved a bit closer where we could see the bird well even with just bins. We were able to get some halfway decent shots at this point and enjoyed prolonged looks as this great bird. This is only my second Thick-billed Murre ever, the first having occurred at Shinnecock Inlet on 1/30/05. This was a lifer for Karen and an exciting sight for me. We finally pulled ourselves away from the inlet and headed to Montauk Point. The bird numbers there were amazing. Thousands upon thousands of scoters were present. Black and Surf Scoters were abundant, White-winged Scoters were in short supply by comparison. Common Eiders, Northern Gannet, Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebe, Bonaparte’s Gulls and Red-breasted Mergansers were all seen. The one disappointment was the lack of Razorbills. One gentleman saw one in flight, but no one else present saw it. In the two hours we were there, we had none. Still, it was a great morning. From Montauk, we headed to Dune Road and Shinnecock Inlet. Our results here were less than spectacular. We had all the regularly expected species, but nothing special. I ended the day with a couple of new year birds and Karen cleaned up with some lifers and many year birds! Great birding!!
