Sullivan County Winter Waterfowl Count

The ongoing Wood Duck at Linear Park.

The ongoing Wood Duck at Linear Park.

Today 1/17/16, Arlene Borko and I toured the county counting waterfowl. It was a relatively productive day, though we missed a couple of birds that we had recently seen. The areas of focus were Wurtsboro Ponds, Bashakill WMA, Linear Park, Neversink River, Rondout Reservoir, White Lake, Rio and Mongaup Reservoirs. There were other teams out around the county, so this report reflects only our totals. The numbers for the county will increase once all the groups report in. Here is the list of what we had:

Canada Geese – 569
Mallard – 200
Black Duck – 30
Common Mergansers – 43
Hooded Mergansers – 26
Common Goldeneye – 7
Ring-necked Duck – 1
Wood Duck – 1
Total – 877

Another bird of interest, not seen by us, but found by Lance Vererame at the Neversink Reservoir was a Common Loon!
