I didn’t have to start cooking until this afternoon so I spent the morning scouting the CBC area again. What a beautiful Christmas Day! I had a high of sixty degrees and the birds were quite active today. I managed to eek out 31 species in four hours and that is my best count in weeks. I continue to add species to the count week period and was pleased with some of the birds. The Common Loon continues on Kiamesha Lake, as do the many (200+) Common Mergansers. Unfortunately, I found no Hooded Mergansers today. At the Shop-rite Plaza, 7 Herring Gulls joined the 75 Ring-billed Gulls that are usually there. The best bird of the day however, was a most unexpected EASTERN PHOEBE!! The bird is in a yard at the end of French Clearing Road in my sector of the CBC. I spoke with the home owners who say the bird has never left since the summer and can be seen daily fly-catching off their clothes line. They told me to feel free to wander around to get some photos. Hopefully, though it has already made count week, it will be present on Sunday morning. Since some good things have finally begun to show up, hopefully with many birding teams out on Sunday even more exciting finds will be made!
