Still another Franklin’s Gull on Bonita Beach!

This afternoon at around 4:30 pm, a photo shoot took place on the beach in front of our condo. For some reason this attracted a tremendous number of gulls. At least 500 Laughing Gulls showed up for a handout. There are often large parties on the beach where the birds can get a free meal, but not this time. I walked through the gulls scanning them for something different. Once again, I found a FRANKLIN’S GULL. This bird was distinct from the others this morning in that it had obvious yellow markings on its upper legs. This appeared to be a natural coloring of the legs, but I have no idea why they would be yellow. I’ve attached a photo of this bird so you can see how distinct it was. This brings to FIVE the number of Franklin’s Gulls on Bonita Beach today! That’s pretty neat considering all but one previous record of this species has occurred either last year or this year.

Note the yellowish coloring of the upper legs of this Franklin's Gull.
