Sullivan County – yeah, almost the entire county!

Karen Miller and I birded the county this morning. Yes, almost the entire county. I started at Morningside hoping for some late shorebirds. From there, we met at the Rondout Reservoir. From there we went to the Neversink Reservoir and on to Swan Lake. We finished up with several hours at the Bashakill. I had been hoping for a blow out morning with last nights intense northwest winds, but that didn’t happen. I had forgotten today was the first day of duck season and we encountered hunting at both Swan Lake and the Bashakill, this reduced our waterfowl take considerably. We did have some nice birds though. Here is a list of the highlights with the location:

Great Egret – continues at Morningside
Ring-necked Duck – FOS at Rondout Reservoir
RED-NECKED GREBE – (1) FOS at the Neversink Reservoir
Horned Grebe – (2) Neversink Reservoir
Pied-billed Grebe – (1) Swan Lake
Ruddy Duck – Swan Lake
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH – ongoing bird, now in its third day, in the Deli Fields at the Bashakill

Once again the Gray-cheeked Thrush toyed with me and my camera, but Karen got some nice shots, she shares two of them here. Thanks Karen and Congratulations on your life Gray-cheeked Thrush!

The Gray-cheeked Thrush was feeding on grapes and Virginia Creeper in the small parking area at the back of the Deli Fields just before the boat launch.
