Jamaica Bay

White-eyed Vireo in the South Garden

White-eyed Vireo in the South Garden

Today, Bill Fiero and I headed to Jamaica Bay on Long Island to try for some new year birds. We had a great day in spite of the heat. We had many interesting birds. Highlights included Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-herons, Glossy Ibis, Great and Snowy Egrets, Little Blue Heron, Forster’s, Common and Least Terns, Willet and American Oystercatchers. New year birds for me were WHITE-EYED VIREO and BARN OWL. The Barn Owl is this years chick, still in the nest box. It would move its face back and forth in front of the opening, I think catching a breeze in the heat. The White-eyed Vireo was in the South Garden, exactly where Bill and I had it last year. A non avian highlight were a couple of Diamond Backed Terrapins searching for a spot to lay their eggs!
