First Fall Juvenile Shore Birds

Shore Bird activity has been at a minimum for the last ten days. The Stilt Sandpiper and Lesser Yellowlegs were the last new arrivals. Most of the shore birds continued, but the peeps had pretty much moved out. Today at Apollo Plaza the ongoing Lesser Yellowlegs continued with about ten Killdeer. At Morningside Park the first Least Sandpipers in a few days were present. This small flock of six were new birds. This was easily evidenced by the presence of three fresh fall juvenile birds. These were the first migrant juveniles we’ve had so far this season. Our shore bird numbers usually pick up in August (our best month) so lets hope for some increased activity! One Spotted Sandpiper was also present as well as Great Blue and Green Herons.
