Today I met Pete Schyler at the Bashakill and we birded most of the hot spots throughout the morning. The big numbers of Horned Grebe that were present yesterday were mostly gone. We found a total of 8 this morning, but a couple of really nice breeding plumage birds were among them. Ring-necked Duck numbers soared. I had a total of 345 between all locations birded. Bufflehead numbers were up with 45 seen. The Scaup were mostly gone, with only one pair of Lesser Scaup seen off Haven Road. I finally got my FOS Osprey, at least two have returned thus far. We had five Rusty Blackbirds at the Deli Fields boat launch. At least two of the Red-breasted Mergansers continue. On the Birch Trail, a small flock of teal included six Green-winged and two Blue-winged Teal. It was another great day on the Bashakill. The big excitement came this evening when I received a call just before 6 PM that Matt Zeitler had found a CASPIAN TERN on Glenmere Lake in Chester! I all but flew down and was fortunate enough to get some great looks at the bird. Karen Miller, Rob and Anthony Stone were able to see it as well. I got some pretty bad shots of the bird, but fortunately Matt got some nice flight shots (as Matt usually does!). My thanks to all involved in making it a great evening and getting me yet another new Orange County bird.
