The goose spectacle continues in Orange County. This morning Rob Stone and I were out checking all the good spots and both Snow and Canada Geese were abundant. Many thousands of these birds could be seen on the ground and in the air. While checking out fields of Snow Geese at the Pine Island Turf Nursery, I recognized the honking of different geese. I knew they were in the air, but couldn’t initially pick anything out of the masses of birds flying about. I then scanned the Canada Geese that had flown in nearby and there were two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with them. I’ve attached some photos of the three species seen this morning. Additionally, there was a pair of TUNDRA SWANS on Skinner Lane with the Canada Geese there. I finished up there and then headed to the Bashakill. With so many snow geese moving I hoped for some to be passing there. It only took a minute out of the car and about six skeins of nearly 100 birds each passed overhead. The Red-breasted Merganser continues on Haven Road, though many of the other mergansers had moved on this morning.
