Hatch year female Redhead at Rondout Reservoir

Hatch year female Redhead at Rondout Reservoir

You may have guessed from my silence that very little has been happening recently. We have remained under a deep freeze and there have been no winter finches to speak of. Water fowl continue to be the only point of interest in the county. Purple Finches seem to be everywhere in the northern half of the county and a single Rough-legged Hawk and flock of the 30 Snow Bunting have been the only other birds of interest. A hatch year female duck at the Rondout Reservoir over the last couple of weeks has kept me guessing. It turns out that it is a hatch year female REDHEAD. Never common in the county, we have had one to three present each week the last month. I hope we get some breaks soon and the birding picks up.
