Westchester and Bronx

On 1/9, I traveled to the above locations. Specifically Read Nature Sanctuary and Pelham Bay Park. I had a good count of birds for the day, but not as many as I expected. The deep freeze has clearly affected waterfowl in those areas. Read had many Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Horned Grebes, Greater and Lesser Scaup, 3 Ruddy Duck and Black Ducks. No Brant. The only shore birds were 3 Killdeer and 8 Dunlin. Fish Crow was new for the year. From there I went to Pelham Bay where there were more birds. Gadwall were in good numbers. American Wigeon, Hooded Mergansers and the only two Cansvasback of the day were there. There were many passerines. White-throated and Song Sparrow dominated. I also had two Fox Sparrows and two Eastern Towhees. It a good morning, but there were fewer birds in all than I am used to in January at these spots.
