Sullivan County Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl on power pole along Rt. 17 B in Bethel,

This afternoon, my good friend Ed Morse called to tell me his daughter saw a Snowy Owl on a telephone pole along Rt 17B in Bethel. I quickly met Arlene Borko and headed up to the area. I notified Lance Verderame and Scott Baldinger along the way. We arrived to find a beautiful hatch year SNOWY OWL still perched on the pole. I was able to reach many birders from the area and Orange County. Before the end of the day 23 people were able to get great views of this bird as it flew from pole to pole, landed in the field and roosted on a shed. Shortly after we arrived, the owl pounced down on some unseen prey in the ditch. It remained in the ditch for 5 minutes unseen. When it came out it flew back to the perch on the pole. About half an hour later it regurgitated a pellet. I don’t think it could be from anything it got while we were there, but it was good to know it had eaten. It was a great afternoon. Just at the end of the day, a DEC police officer arrived to see what all the commotion was about. I pointed out the owl and he was very surprised. He informed us his surprise was doubled due to the fact he had just found his first Snowy Owl Thursday on the power line swath near Hickok Brook (also Sullivan County). He couldn’t believe he was seeing his second Snowy in just a few days. As for all of us locally, we can’t be happier that Sullivan County decided to get in on the Snowy Owl invasion!
This cooperative bird entertained many this afternoon.
