Striking Vesper Sparrow at the Deli Fields

While I suspect it will be some time before we repeat the sparrow excitement in Orange County yesterday, the Deli Fields continue to have many sparrows. I was unable to find the Clay-colored Sparrow for the second day in a row. That said, Song, Swamp, White-throated and Chipping all continue to be abundant. White-crowned, Field and Savannah continue in lower numbers. A new VESPER SPARROW was found this morning. This very worn adult was pale with bright rufous lesser coverts making the bird quite striking. While I was able to get photos, I couldn’t get an angle for the lesser coverts. Carolina Wren, Bluebirds, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers all continue in good numbers. Eastern Phoebe and Ruby-crowned Kinglet were in very reduced numbers today.
