Rob Stone has done it again! This time it is Orange County’s first record of “BLACK SKIMMER”. Rob found the juvenile Black Skimmer on Glenmere Lake this morning near Chester, New York. He initially had great views of the bird as it skimmed back and forth over the lake. Once the rest of us arrived, the storm picked up quickly and the rain and wind were extreme. The bird remained perched on mud flats on the far side of the lake most of the time. Soon however, a Bald Eagle flew low over the bird and it flushed and flew around for a few minutes. This would happen several times over the next couple of hours, giving everyone an opportunity to see the bird well in flight. While my pics are very distant, they distinctly show a juvenile Black Skimmer. Thanks to Rob for another great find! Nice to see so many got out to see this great bird, an extreme rarity inland.

  1. Wow! Incredible! Congratulations and great job getting photos John – I was wondering if you were able to pull it off with the weather and everything. I, unfortunately, had no luck this evening trying to relocate the bird.

    • Sorry to hear that Matt, I wonder if it is still around or took off in that storm? Hopefully someone will check tomorrow morning just in case. I am going to check some water then head to the Hawk Watch, winds should be good!
