Matt Zeitler getting some close ups of the Baird’s Sandpiper

This morning I ran into Matt Zeitler at Morningside Park. He was out looking for the Baird’s Sandpiper. We kayaked the lake, searching for the bird, but did not initially find it. Matt had the two juvie Semipalmated Plover before I arrived, and most of the other birds that had been present the last few days were still there. The Baird’s was not present. As we toured the islets getting some photos of the shore birds, a bird flew into the island we were sitting up against. As soon as it came into view I realized it was the Baird’s Sandpiper. We had great looks and it was quite cooperative for photos. Matt surely got some great shots of the bird. At one point it flew to another island where a Semipalmated Sandpiper was foraging. They fed right next to each other, giving great comparison shots. Another great morning at Morningside.
