Lance Verderame and I headed to Westchester County this morning to try for some new year birds. Lance hadn’t been south yet and was able to compile a nice year list. I had my first Gray Catbird of the year. At Read/Rye Town Park we had Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebes, Long-tailed Duck, Black Scoter, Brant and Red-breasted Mergansers. Playland Lake had ten Canvasback and six Greater Scaup, Hooded Merganser and Bufflehead. Marshland Conservancy was very birdy, but we missed all of the good birds that had been present last month. The deep snow may have been the cause of this. Several Fox Sparrows were nice to see. At Croton Point, we found a Barred Owl and many Bald Eagles. On the water there were Mute Swans and typical waterfowl.
