While I was out scoping for our upcoming Christmas Count this morning I had some nice birds. I came across three Red-shouldered Hawks, three Pileated Woodpeckers and a nice assortment of waterfowl. I only saw 27 species in my count sector, but that is only a little low and I only spent 3 1/2 hours in the area. Outside of the area, the tremendous numbers of Common Mergansers was impressive. Yankee Lake had 169 individuals and Kiamesha Lake had 182. I had 21 more at Sacket Lake. I only found one Common Redpoll the entire day. It was a cool but sunny day and great to be out birding.
