Summitville Hawk Watch Season Begins

One of the first Osprey of the season migrates high over the tower at the Summitville Hawk Watch 9/9/12

Following another great morning of birding at the Bashakill with Lance, Scott, Deb, Lee, Danny etc. I kicked off the hawk watch season at the Summitville Fire Tower. It was one of our best first days ever ( we’ve had poor to no wind, rain or otherwise poor conditions so far this season, which holds the birds back) The total countable birds seen from 10:45 am until 4 pm were as follows:

Osprey – 6
Bald Eagle – 8
Northern Harrier – 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk – 7
Cooper’s Hawk – 1
Broad-winged Hawk – 82
American Kestrel – 2

For a total of 107 raptors. Not a bad start to the season.
