Mearn’s Bird Club “Break 100 Day”

This weekend I participated in the Mearn’s Bird Club’s Break 100 Day. I was a member of Danny Messina’s Team which also included Jeff Goulding and Lisa O’Gorman. We birded the following areas: Bashakill WMA, Laurel Grove Cemetary, Oil City Road, 6 1/2 Station Road, Doodletown Road, Mine Torn Road, Sterling Forest and Benedict Park as well as many spots while traveling. We ended our day with 112 species. The winning Team of McDermott, McDermott, Stone and Skyler had 125 species. Highlights for our team included:

Ring-necked Duck
Sora
Merlin
Great Horned Owl
Purple Martin
Hermit Thrush
Kentucky Warbler
Orchard Oriole
We had a total of 18 species of warbler, but most were in very low numbers and it was tough finding them. This was only my second time doing this count and I was glad to have the chance to bird with a nice group of people.
