Bashakill 3/11/12

The abundance of waterfowl continued at the Bashakill today. A few species had increased in number, while some decreased. Either way many species were represented and it was a great day of birding. Here is a list of what was seen today:

Canada Geese
Wood Duck – 200+
Gadwall – 6
American Wigeon – 40+
American Black Duck
Mallard
Northern Shoveler – 2
Northern Pintail – 25
Green-winged Teal – 25
Ring-necked Duck
Bufflehead – 8
Common Merganser
Hooded Merganser
Pied-billed Grebe – 3

Others seen recently, but not today included
Common Goldeneye -8
Lesser Scaup – 4
Red-breasted Merganser – 2
Mute Swan – 3
American Coot – 1

This brings the number of species to 19 so far this year. This is far ahead of what we would normally have seen, as these birds have been present(some since January) for some time now. We usually don’t get this big an infllux until mid March.
