Sullivan County the first week of the year.

I made a couple of forays around the county this week. In spite of the extreme cold mid-week, the birds were pretty active. Arlene Borko joined me on three occasions. The highlights of the week are the continuing PURPLE FINCHES, found in a number of locations, but most numerous near the Sacket Lake Boat Launch and South Maplewoods Road, both near Sacket Lake. An unexpected bird was an over-wintering GRAY CATBIRD. First found by Lance Verderame on 1/1, Arlene and I were able to relocate it on 1/2. An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen by Arlene and I on 1/2 in the Hunter Road area of Neversink. Finally on 1/7, we spotted a beautiful DARK PHASE ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Rt 55 in Neversink. The Mute Swan continues among the many waterfowl at the Bashakill. Not a bad start to the year.
