Westchester County 11/30/11

Today, 11/30/11, Renee Davis, Marge Gorton and I traveled to Westchester County to pick up some new year birds. We birded Lenoir Nature Preserve, Read Nature Sanctuary, Marshlands Conservancy and Croton Point Park. We had a total of 40 species for the day with some nice birds seen. Highlights included American Pipit, Snow Bunting and especially the Rufous Hummingbird at Lenoir. We were fortunate to arrive just after they had set up to catch and band the hummer. Bob Yunick, a licensed professional Hummingbird Bander, was doing the banding. We got to observe the bird for about 15 minutes before it entered the trap. It was amazing to watch Bob measure, weigh, take a feather sample, check extent of fat and overall health of the bird. It was my first hummingbird banding and quite a nice experience. It was nice to see old friend Bill Lee too. Here are some of the pictures I was able to take of the happenings.
