Birding Marathon!!

What a day today was. I started out birding Morningside Park and Apollo plaza this morning, heading to Orange County black dirt region for shorebirds after that. I had my first BAIRD’S SANDPIPER for Sullivan County this year at the Apollo, but not much else. Once I reached Skinner Lane, I easily found the RED PHALAROPE from yesterday, as about ten people were there watching it among a mass of shorebirds. American Golden Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Short-billed Dowitcher, Killdeer, Least, Semipalmated, Spotted and Pectoral Sandpipers were all in good numbers. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs were both present. At least five White-rumped Sandpipers were just a taste of the numbers to come. Wilson’s Snipe and one Baird’s Sandpiper were also seen. Finishing up, I headed back to Sullivan County. I wouldn’t be there long though. Rob Stone called to tell me he was at Turtle Bay and had a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. I zoomed back down, only to miss the bird which was flushed by a Peregrine Falcon. There were more shorebirds here than I had seen anywhere this year. At least 100 White-rumped Sandpipers were shortly joined by at least that and again some. This was the most WRSP’s I have ever seen. Other great birds here included most of the same birds from Skinner Lane as well as three RUDDY TURNSTONES ( I only saw one, but was pleased to see it!) Another Baird’s Sandpiper and many Semipalmated Plovers were among the abundance seen. Two Peregrine Falcons now hassled the birds, but I never saw them succede. Finally tearing myself away, I returned home again, only to be called by Lance Verderame who had found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at the Wurtsboro Airport. Arlene Borko and I ran out and got to see it as well. I had an 18 species shorebird day of 19 species seen. Great Birding!!
